A chef prepares food to a set standard, runs a section of a kitchen or runs the whole kitchen. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars, cafes and bakeries across Nepal hire chefs, and chef is also one of the most common skilled jobs Nepalis take abroad.
How a kitchen is organised
Kitchen helper. Washes, cuts, cleans and learns.
Commis. A junior cook working under a section chef.
Chef de partie. Runs one section. In Nepal, kitchens are often split into Continental, Indian, Chinese, Nepali and tandoor sections.
Sous chef. Second in charge. Runs the kitchen when the head chef is away.
Head chef or executive chef. Plans the menu, controls cost and leads the team.
