Cooks and kitchen helpers keep a kitchen moving. Restaurants, hotels, bars, school and hospital canteens, Montessori schools and bakeries all hire them. It is one of the few jobs where you can start with no certificate and learn a trade that is in demand at home and abroad.
The roles
Kitchen helper or kitchen assistant. Washes and cuts vegetables, cleans, carries stock and helps the cooks.
Dishwasher. Keeps plates, pots and utensils clean and ready during service.
Cook or line cook. Cooks orders at one station, such as the grill, the fryer or the curry section.
Canteen or school cook. Cooks large quantities of the same menu on a timetable.
