How to pass a remote job interview: the video call checklist

A remote interview is two interviews at once. The employer is judging your answers, and also whether you can run a clear video call from home, because that is what the job will be every day. Getting the setup right is the easy half, so do it first.

Before the call

• Test the link the day before. Install the app they use (Google Meet, Zoom or Teams) and join a test call.

• Plan for power cuts. Charge your laptop fully. Keep your phone charged as a backup, with mobile data on.

• Check your internet speed at the same time of day as the interview.

• Choose the room. Quiet, light in front of you rather than behind you, and a plain wall behind.

• Tell the house. Ask people not to walk in for the hour.

During the call

• Join two or three minutes early.

• Look at the camera when you speak, not at your own face on the screen.

• Keep answers to about a minute, then stop. Silence feels longer on video.

• If the connection drops, rejoin straight away and say so briefly. It happens to everybody; handling it calmly is a good sign.

Questions remote employers always ask

"Why do you want to work remotely?" Talk about focus and results, not about avoiding traffic.

"How do you manage your time without a manager nearby?" Describe your actual routine: when you start, how you plan the day, how you track tasks.

"How do you communicate when you are stuck?" Show that you ask early and in writing, with the problem, what you tried and what you need.

"What is your setup?" Name your internet provider, your backup, and where you work.

"Tell us about work you did on your own." Pick one example with a clear result.

After the call
