Remote job scams in Nepal: 10 warning signs

Remote work attracts scammers because the victim never visits an office. The script changes, but the shape stays the same: an easy job, a big payment, and a small fee or a small favour before you start. Learn the signs once and you will spot them every time.

The 10 warning signs

1. You are asked to pay first. A registration fee, a training fee, a "security deposit", a laptop you must buy from them. Real employers never charge you to work.

2. The pay is too good for the work. Tens of thousands of rupees a week for liking posts or typing captchas is not a job.

3. The offer came to you unasked. A WhatsApp or Telegram message from a stranger offering a job you never applied for.

4. No interview, instant hire. A real employer wants to talk to you before trusting you with their work.

5. Tasks that earn "commission" after you deposit money. Rating products or hotels, then being told to top up to unlock your earnings. This is the most common scam of all.

6. They want your bank login, OTP or wallet PIN. No employer ever needs these.

7. The company cannot be found. No website, no registered address, or a website created last week.

8. Pressure to decide today. "Only three places left" is a sales trick, not hiring.

9. Payment through personal accounts. Salary promised from someone's personal wallet or a changing list of accounts.

10. They move you off the platform. "Let's talk on Telegram instead" usually means there will be no record of what was promised.
